Introduction
The Department of Hepatic Surgery is an important branch of the Department of General Surgery, a National Key Clinical Specialties. There are currently 13 surgeons with doctoral degree, including 7 professors and 2 associate professors. More than 1200 patients are admitted and approximately 1100 operative procedures (surgery, percutaneous ablation, ERCP, etc.) were performed each year.
Clinical Services
We provides therapy for hepatobiliary, pancreatic and spleen diseases, including primary (hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma) and metastatic liver cancer, liver hemangioma, gallbladder /bile duct cancer and stones, benign and malignant pancreatic tumors, portal hypertension, spleen tumors and secondary hypersplenism, etc. Open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, ERCP, and choledochoscope are routinely performed according to patient’s disease status. Most of the treatment choices are decided after multidisciplinary discussion.
Education
There are 2 Ph.D. supervisors and 4 master's supervisor in the department. We recruit 2-3 Ph.D. students, 3-4 graduate students and 15-20 surgical trainees each year. There are currently 8 Ph.D. students and 9 graduate students studying in our department. As one of the main surgical practice bases for surgical interns, we undertake teaching assignments for both undergraduate students and graduate students.
Research
The main research interests of our department include both basic and clinical studies of liver cancer (including hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma). We focused on the carcinogenesis, metastasis and targeted therapy of liver cancer. During the past 5 years, we have more than 20 foundations granted, including 8 National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars. At the same time, we have published more than 70 SCI papers in international journals, such as Hepatology, Nature Communication, Annals of Surgery, Oncogene, British Journal of Cancer, etc.
International Collaboration
Most of doctors have oversea studying experience in counties like USA, Japan, and Canada. We had collaborations with RIKEN (Rikagaku Kenkyusho/Institute of Physical and Chemical Research) from Japan and made achievements in tumor vaccine therapy against hepatocellular carcinoma. Results have been published in Clinical Cancer Research and other SCI cited journals. In addition, we encourage our Ph.D. students and graduate students to study abroad.
